Essex and Suffolk's largest multi award-winning modern choir with a twist!

The award winning Funky Voices ® was founded and launched in 2007 by Sandra Colston (Musical Director) …to meet a need in the community for something fresh and new, a choir that sing modern music that can be enjoyed by everyone, no audition and no experience needed. Funky Voices sets itself apart from other community choirs offering singers a multitude of varied experiences ranging from once in a lifetime performance opportunities, chances to travel the world and also take part in the recording of albums. Every singer has the fantastic opportunity to learn up to 50 songs per year, perform at over 100 events, tour and compete in music festivals local and worldwide, record multiple albums for iTunes, appearances on TV and radio and perform alongside hugely established music artists. All Funky Voices singers are given these incredible opportunities, although everyone is more than welcome to take as little or as much out of their experience as they would like to.

What to expect

Funky Voices bring energy and enthusiasm with their performances where ever they go. They sing upbeat, modern music known by everyone by artists such as Queen, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, Prince and more. Funky Voices have had the honour of performing at outstanding venues and events both natonally and internationally including London West End Theaters, London Southbank, New York, Berlin, Disneyland Paris, Ireland, Barcelona as well as multiple music festivals, theme parks, awards ceremonies, weddings, charity events and more. Funky Voices have also had the honour of performing alongside Musical Theatre star Kerry Ellis, G4 at their Reunion Concert (The Barbican), Joe McElderry, Blake, X Factor's Marcus Collins, Imogen Heap, BGT finalists Richard and Adam and more.

Q: How long does setup take? A: Depending on the impact you wish to create, setup can take anything from 30 minutes to two hours. A 30 minute set up is a standard choir performance, however if you are looking for more of a spectacle with lighting, professional microphones etc this will take longer
Q: What are your space and power requirements? A: Enough space for 50-over 100 singers Power supply would be helpful but we can provide battery powered PA systems
Q: Do you take requests? A: Depending on the impact you wish to create, we can take request so long as there is enough notice prior to the performance

Since joining Funky Voices I have made new friends, enjoyed our weekly sessions and had experiences I never dreamed of. I have been to Riga, Corfu and Antalya, sung in the Barbican, Covent Garden Piazza and the Festival Hall. What is your passion? Mine is Funky Voices! Just under 2 years ago I joined them. I was so so nervous when I first walked into that hall. I knew no one and I was so out of my comfort zone. At the age of 58 it was a scary leap to take. And although I’ve always sung to myself at the top of my voice in the car and at home, I’ve never had any kind of vocal training and had no idea if I could really sing properly. But it turns out I’m ok. And that it really doesn’t matter that much anyhow. Because it is together, in a group, that this amazing wall of sound is created and quite frankly there’s just nothing else quite like it. It’s often very emotional and it’s something really magical that I share with this fabulous bunch of people I’ve come to love and whom are now amongst my most special of friends. I feel so lucky to have discovered @funkyvoices and to be a part of something so wonderful. We’ve performed in hospices for patients and their families. In charity gigs large and small. Gigs in London, gigs locally in Essex and also abroad. We’ve sung in theatres and in a huge arena in Sweden where we competed in the European Choir Games this year. We’ve performed in street gigs, competitions and Christmas gigs on our own and as an act alongside others. Next year we are singing in Spain near Barcelona and in 2 weeks’ time we will be visiting the Christmas markets in Bruges and singing there. I feel so blessed. Whatever did I do with myself before Funky Voices?
