and The One Show and has recently featured in a BBC documentary called 30 Years of
Hurt a documentary about the miner’s strike and the death of Margaret Thatcher. He has
appeared with Melvyn Bragg in the BBC series Class and Culture, with Libby Purves on
BBC’s Midweek Programme, Radio Merseyside and many many more
Gary was a miner at Sutton Manor Colliery for 19 years before getting made redundant in
1991. Gary worked initially underground and on the coalface before transferring to the
pit surface and eventually into the colliery management. ‘My Life At The Manor’ tells the
story of growing up in a mining family, the working conditions his forefathers endured,
the horrific working conditions, the injuries and the ill health but the camaraderie and
close knit communities this breed. Gary reflects on how his working life was mapped out
for a totally different occupation and the fortune of a chance meeting that shaped a ca
reer in mining. The talk tells of the humor and heartache, the strike of 85/85 its after
math and finally the closure of a mine with over 40 years of coal left in it. What happened next is nothing short of a miracle.
